About the host

The idea of CrossFit Kalmar started in 2008 when two gym instructors discovered CrossFit and started to hold free “functional movement” classes. In 2009 we became officially affiliated as one of the first ten CrossFit gyms in Sweden and Europe. Since then we have grown slowly from a non- profitable organization in a warehouse to a full business in a modern 5000 square feet CrossFit facility. Because we have transition slowly and most of our original members are still with us we have been able to keep the family atmosphere and community. With no other CrossFit affiliate within 100 kilometers we have a wide range of members with mom-groups, kids groups, beginner groups, onramp classes and Rx classes. Classes and personal training is held by our 15 level one coaches. Seven of these coaches are also within the OPEX education system.

About the city

About Kalmar:

Kalmar is located at the shore of the Baltic Sea in the south east of Sweden. It is one of the oldest cities in Sweden with a lot of historical and cultural structures. Kalmar castle and the bridge to Öland Island are probably the most well-known signs of the city. Kalmar is now a modern city with the Linnaeus University being the biggest employer but wherever you go you can feel the history around. In the 15th century there were several battles between Denmark and Sweden in Kalmar since it was considered the Key to Sweden and the Baltic Sea. The city therefore suffered by major destruction and the city center was moved to an island and surrounded by thick walls. This architecture is still present today which gives Kalmar city a very special and spectacular scenery framed by the Baltic Sea. Here you can find a lot of restaurants and pubs and Kalmar has the highest ratio of restaurant per citizens in Sweden.

At the end of the 20th century most tourists came to Kalmar either to visit the summer paradise Öland with is a Unesco world heritage, or to go to the glass Kingdom where famous glasswork like Kosta Boda and Orrefors is made. However, during the 21st century Kalmar has developed into the main tourist destination and in 2014 Kalmar was awarded as the second best summer city of Sweden.

In addition to the historical structures and the proximity to Öland and the glass Kingdom big sporting events and concerts attract a lot of tourist in the summer. Most famous is probably the Iron Man race, held mid-august, which was estimated to have 75 000-100 000 spectators last year. There are also several big swim, bike and running events but the major sport of the city is soccer. The city team Kalmar FF won the Swedish championships in 2008 and in 2011 their new arena, Guldfågel Arena, was finished. Kalmar and Guldfågel arena also co-hosted the Europe woman championship in 2013.

How to get here:

Kalmar airport has flight connections from Stockholms two airports, Arlanda and Bromma with three and two connections each day respectively. Busses departing for the city runs by the gym (4 min) which makes it very easy to get to. Another alternative is to go to Copenhagen airport and take the direct train from the airport to Kalmar City. Kalmar is the final destination and the train takes about four hours. The bus from Kalmar Centrum to the gym takes nine minutes.

From Copenhagen, Stockholm and Gothenburg there is several departures every day.

For participants living within driving distance you simply follow the main European road 20 (E20) north from Stockholm or south from Malmö. The gym is right next to the road which will make it very easy to drive to.

The closest hotel is the Scandic Hotell about 500m from the Gym. In the city center there are a lot of hotels for example: Frimurarehotellet,Hotell Packhuset, Calmar Stadshotell, Kalmarsundshotell, First hotell Witt, Slottshotellet. A cheaper alternative is to stay at the hostel Hotel Svanen or at the Camping spot in Kalmar which also has cabins to rent. If anyone is interested in Couch surfing at gym members we are happy to arrange that as well. Please send us an email.
